Glaswegians have been called upon to donate coats to help the city’s homeless as experts predict one of the coldest winters in three decades.

Human Appeal, a Muslim-faith charity based in Greater Manchester, has announced its third-annual ‘Wrap Up Glasgow’ campaign that encourages residents to donate their gently-used coats at various collection points throughout the city.

The clothing will be distributed to more than 100 charities and homeless shelters across the UK.

Last year Human Appeal collected 30,787 items of winter clothing across Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow as part of the campaign.

The charity has collected 137,000 coats since its launch in 2011.

Mohammed Abid Shah of Human Appeal, said: “We’re really excited about this year’s Wrap Up campaigns. Last year was a great success but this year promises to be bigger and better.”

Thousands of Glaswegians will be without a home this winter, leaving them at risk for an estimated record-breaking freeze.

A study released by the University of London last month predicted a return of ‘The Beast from the

East’ from January to February; bringing the coldest UK winter in 30 years. Last winter icy temperatures plummeted to -14C, killing seventeen people across Britain.

Safestore, a self-storage company that has partnered with Human Appeal for eight years and Wrap Up Glasgow since the campaign began, is providing storage space at several of its centres to facilitate the coats’ collection and distribution. Safestore Digital and Marketing Director Shahid Kadodia said the charity is a great cause which supports many Glaswegians during the coldest time of year.

“With so many people in need in Glasgow, sadly some of the most vulnerable people will not have the luxury of wearing a coat this winter. With this figure only set to rise, we are delighted to be helping Wrap Up Glasgow for the third consecutive year,” Kadodia said.

There was an 8% increase in homeless applications filed in Glasgow last year, totaling 5,679 applications, according to Scottish government figures.

Donors can give their coats at the Safestore Glasgow Southside from November 11 to November 22.
