More than 500 homes could be built in Glasgow’s East End after a plan for land near the former Meat Market site was submitted.

Wheatley Group has applied for permission to build 254 units, made up of a mix of family housing and flats, as part of a development which has been dubbed ‘Calton Village’.

The site is bounded by Barrack Street, Gallowgate, Melbourne Street, Sydney Street and Armour Street.

Another plan, submitted by Home Group and currently under consideration by Glasgow City Council, could see 252 apartments built on the old Meat Market site.

The ‘Calton Village’ plan would transform vacant land, with 17 individual blocks, ranging from two to eight storeys, erected.

Wheatley Group is planning to build 221 flats and 33 houses and provide 75 parking spaces. Community consultation was held in Dennistoun Library in July, with more than 30 local residents attending.

Earlier this year, Home Group revealed its proposals for the land at the junction of Duke Street and Bellgrove Street, which include 79 one-bed and 173 two-bed flats. Around 20 of the ground floor flats would be wheelchair accessible.

A commercial unit, 130 car parking spaces and storage for 318 bikes are also proposed.

In a planning statement, Home Group said: “This is an exciting opportunity to develop a housing-led proposal on a key site to the east of the city centre assisting Glasgow City Council in realising their ambitions for the wider Meat Market masterplan.”

The masterplan is covered by the Glasgow City Region City Deal, which will regenerate several sites across the city. “This is focussed on the upgrading of large areas of Glasgow to bring them back into use by creating infrastructure, offices, jobs and houses,” Home Group said.
