A woman is seriously injured hospital after "falling from a bridge" over the M77 resulting in the motorway being closed.

Emergency services were called out to the major road near to Junction 1 at around 10am amid reports that a person had fallen from a bridge.

The road was closed while police dealt with the incident, sparking lengthy delays for motorists.

The Scottish Ambulance Service have since confirmed that a person was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment.

And Police Scotland have since confirmed that the person involved was a woman, who is being treated for serious injuries.

A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 10.01am today to attend an incident on the M77.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, our Special Operations Response Team, an advanced paramedic and a trauma team to the scene and transported a patient to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Glasgow.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed to the Evening Times: "At around 10am, police received reports that a person had fallen from a bridge over the M77.

They later added: "A woman was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where she is being treated for serious injuries.

"The M77 northbound fully re-opened at around 11am."
