First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has spoken of the devasting blow to the community of Pollokshields after a fire ripped through a shop and several homes causing a building to collapse. 

The politician was in her constituency area this morning to meet with and thank emergency services workers who had worked through the night to tackle the blaze.

She said: "Just visited the scene of last night’s devastating fire in Pollokshields in my constituency to say a heartfelt thank you to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland  - it is due to the skill and bravery of our firefighters in particular that no lives were lost in this dreadful incident.

"Many residents and businesses in the area have been affected - some losing their homes.

"While the first priority is help for those directly affected, the location of this fire makes it a blow to the whole community. But Pollokshields is a strong community and I know everyone will rally round."

Meanwhile Guilt actor Tom Urie also praised the emergency services.

He said: "Witnessed the most astonishing bravery I've ever seen last night in Pollokshields by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Absolute heroes."

We reported earlier that the emergency services were called to the Spice Garden in Albert Drive around 11.30 pm last night.

They battled the blaze for several hours before the building collapsed just after 5.30 am.

Residents were evacuated from their homes, which sit above the veg and food shop, and one man has been taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. 

At the height of the fire, at least nine fire engines and two height appliances attended the scene.
