FIRE crews were last night still hosing down a Pollokshields tenement building two days after a devastating blaze.

At the height of the fire at Albert Drive, which caused the collapse of part of a three-storey building, around 60 firefighters, nine appliances and two height appliances were mobilised to the area.

Last night fire chiefs praised the efforts of staff, with only one height appliance and two fire appliances left at the scene.

Roddie Keith, local senior officer for Glasgow, said: “We will remain in attendance until we can ensure that the scene is as safe as possible before handing it into the care of our local authority partners.

“The continued response and support from the community has been outstanding and we must thank them for their patience and support throughout the incident.

“I would also like to recognise the hard work put in by our partners, other emergency services and the local authority and add my thanks to our crews for their efforts in bringing this fire under control.”

An investigation is continuing into determining the cause of the fire, which started in the Spice Garden shop at around 11.30pm on Sunday.
