A person has been hit by a car in Kilwinning as the town celebrated the Christmas Lights Switch-On.

The victim - who is thought to be a female child - was struck by the car in Lauchlan Way just before 7pm last night.

Our sister title, the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald, reports that the youngster was taken to Crosshouse Hospital.

Police would not confirm the age of the child, however local reports suggest she is a young girl.

The incident comes just weeks after nine-year-old Tiffany Crawford was struck by a car last month in the town's Dalry Road as she walked home from school.

A spokesman for Police Scotland last night said: "We were called to a report of a pedestrian having been struck by a car in Lauchlan Way, Kilwinning at around 7pm this evening.

"The person has been conveyed to Crosshouse Hospital by ambulance.

"The road is currently closed off while officers deal with the incident."
