THE former Glasgow Garden Festival site on the south banks of the River Clyde has been earmarked for a new hotel.
In a sign of the city’s continuing boom in hotel construction, a planning application has been lodged to develop a new Holiday Inn at Pacific Quay.
Glasgow firm Mosaic Architecture + Design has lodged the application on behalf of Pacific Quay Developments, which intends to invest £18 million in the project.

The proposed hotel, located next door to the STV studios, would provide more than 50 jobs, and run by RBH Hospitality Management. Its development would signify the continuing development of the Pacific Quay area, which is also home to the headquarters of BBC Scotland and the Glasgow Science Centre.
Mosaic director Neil Haining said: "This development has been carefully designed in response to the site’s immediate context within Pacific Quay and provides the area with a new business hotel of appropriate scale and with high quality materials.
“The overall scale of the development has been carefully balanced with the BBC headquarters to the west and STV Glasgow to the east of the site and completes the last waterfrontage site along Pacific Quay.

“The development has been designed to take advantage of the views of the SECC, The Hydro and the Finnieston Crane, with ground floor hotel reception and public areas connecting through to an external terrace and a rooftop skybar and terrace with north and south facing views.”
Malcolm Pearson, director of Pacific Quay Developments, said: “Although situated on one of the prime remaining waterfront sites to be developed in Glasgow, this site has lain derelict for over 15 years.
“With Scottish Events Campus aiming to enhance its conference and exhibition offer by extending circa 200,000 sq ft, adding further pressure on accommodation provision, Holiday Inn Pacific Quay will constitute an outstanding addition to Glasgow’s hospitality offering to a key strategic site for Glasgow, bringing new opportunities for economic growth to the city.”
The proposed hotel is one of a range of Glasgow projects Mosaic is currently engaged in. It is involved in plans to convert the former C&A store in Sauchiehall Street into a hotel, and to create a whisky bar, alongside 25 serviced apartments, in the Teacher Building on St Enoch Square.
