ALMOST 80,000 union members have backed calls for Glasgow City Council to refuse any planning permission for the site of the McVitie's factory in Tollcross.
The GMB union has penned a letter to councillors, urging them not to prevent any planning permission for residential property or any similar development at the plot.
Several union branches have given their backing to the move including the Strathclyde University and College Union branch as well as Glasgow politicians Paul Sweeney and Pauline McNeil.
The GMB believes that if pladis do not agree on a plan to save jobs at the factory then they should not be able to sell the plant at a profit.
GMB Scotland Organiser, David Hume, said: "We have said that we will explore every avenue and exhaust every option to save these skilled manufacturing jobs in the East End and this is why we are writing to every Glasgow City Councillor seeking their support.
"With the support of the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council, the action group to save the jobs has formulated a robust and comprehensive counter proposal which will be submitted to the company on Tuesday 27th July.
"We are clear that only if they agree to co-operate to save these jobs and protect the history of our local community, should the land they own then be repurposed for residential use and then sold on for that purpose."
Pladis has been approached for comment.
