Glasgow author inspired by schoolchildren to support homeless charity

Angela Proctor, who as AH Proctor writes the Thumble Tumble books for young children, was approached by pupils at St Francis of Assisi Primary in the Gorbals to help raise awareness of the plight of homeless families.

Inspired by their enthusiasm, she created Arthur’s Christmas Tale, about a homeless pug who melts Jack Frost’s heart with a small act of kindness on Christmas Eve.

The film has now been turned into a stop motion animation by Glasgow companies Clubhouse and Strangeworx, and it will be shown in the Grosvenor in Ashton Lane, and its sister cinemas in Edinburgh, Perth, Alloa, Bathgate and Arbroath, this festive season.

Angela said: "I've had my eyes opened by Shelter Scotland into just how vital their work is, from taking calls from those in crisis to providing food and clothing, as well as shelter.

“Being homeless has a lasting impact on families and children, and it was heartbreaking to hear some of their stories. If we can get a cinema in every city across Scotland to show the animation it will have a huge impact on raising awareness and much-needed funding.”

As of March 31, 2023, there were 15,039 households in temporary accommodation in Scotland, including 9595 children, the highest number ever recorded. 

Around 64 Glasgow pupils took part in the live action scenes which appear in the short film, including Kyle, Iona and Lexi, all 13, and 12-year-old Bixuan, who helped Angela launch her appeal.

Martin Taylor, Operations Manager at the Scotsman Group, who own the Glasgow Grosvenor, said: "We are delighted to show Arthur’s Christmas Tale in aid of Shelter Scotland across all of our cinemas throughout the month of December. The short animation will be played during all of our trailer reels across all of the scheduled public screenings.

“Cinema is unique in showcasing magical moments on the big screen, especially during the festive season and we are thrilled to be given the opportunity to recognise and promote Scottish talent, community engagement and a cause which we can all fully support.

“During these tough times, with the rising cost of living and national housing crisis exacerbating the situation it is important to recognise the great efforts of Shelter Scotland in combating bad housing and homelessness. I hope the short animation raises awareness and inspire audiences to do what they can by donating this festive season."
