A new Cats Protection centre has opened in Glasgow and is hoping to rehome “thousands” of pets.
The charity launched its latest £1.16 million branch in the Southside of the city this afternoon.
The homing centre will work in tandem with the charity’s Glasgow Adoption Centre in Auchinloch to help even more cats in the city and surrounding areas.
Scottish cat-lover, and BBC Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip presenter Roo Irvine was joined by volunteers as she cut the purple ribbon at the grand opening.
The centre has 20 pens and already has several residential cats who are looking for a home.
Andy McPhee, a rehoming and welfare assistant, has worked with Cats Protection for 17 years and spoke to the Glasgow Times about his excitement for the new centre.
He said: “This means we can get the cats a home much quicker because we have a second centre.
“Having a presence in the Southside means we can cover the whole of Glasgow, hopefully, this also marks the start of many new things to come for Scotland.
“If people are thinking of rehoming a cat all they have to do is go to our website and we can try and find a good match for them.”
Helena Brailsford, Territory Operations Manager at Cats Protection, said at the event: “It is so exciting to be open after months and months of hard work from our teams on the ground.
“Exciting times ahead as we have been trying very hard to create a more cohesive style of working in Scotland.
“We are now focusing on the rebuild of the original Glasgow adoption centre and also working to get a network of multiple sites around Scotland.
“This will help the cats be in the best place for their needs. The more we work together the more we can achieve and the more cats we can help.
“We are at the start of a very exciting journey with our branches and adoption centres working closely together."
Kit Sturgess, Chair of Trustees at Cats Protection, said: “Think of all the cats we can rehome at this wonderful new centre.
“Although we have 20 pens here, we hope to rehome thousands of cats from this centre over a year, which is just fantastic.
“It is great to see a whole mix of volunteers and staff getting involved at an event like this.”
