Caroline Weir could potentially be back in action for the European Championships play-offs, according to Scotland manager Pedro Martinez Losa.
The Real Madrid midfielder ruptured her ACL at Hampden at the end of September in a Nations League tie against Belgium with her absence, as well as Emma Watson’s, particularly costly across the breadth of what became a winless campaign.
She has been in constant dialogue with Martinez Losa as she goes through her rehab with one moment in particular causing much excitement last week.
“I speak to Caroline regularly and to Emma Watson too,” said Martinez Losa. “Caroline was very excited to show me a video the other day and it was her first day on the treadmill. We are not doctors but we do have dreams and it would be great if she and Emma could get some minutes before the end of the season and be 100% for the play-offs.
“They are both exceptional talents but both are also very strong mentally, as they have had to be over the last few months. As a group we are all in contact with them.”
Of more immediate note is Scotland game against Finland this afternoon in the Pinatar Cup final. The win over the Philippines on Saturday was the first positive result since that sobering Nations League campaign with Martinez Losa looking for a win again today in order that Scotland go into the April qualifiers in a more positive state of mind.
“It is always good for the energy of the group to get a win and a good performance so hopefully we can do that,” he said. “I think Finland are a very similar standard to the level of teams that we can expect to come up against in the European Championships and, potentially, in the play-offs.
“I think there are a lot of positives to take into the game from Saturday’s performance and hopefully we can build on that.
“We had 34 crosses into the box against the Philippines and that is important because we have been stressing how vital it is that we improve in the final third.
“We know that it is not an easy fix and it will not happen in one or two games but the sessions we are working on in training we are seeing in games and that is positive.
“It will be a hugely competitive game and it would be good for us to sign off with a good result to keep the energy in the team.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
