Residents' fears about Glasgow road after boy, 12, hit by car

The schoolboy was crossing Great Western Road in Drumchapel when he was hit by the vehicle at around 8am. His condition is currently unknown. 

Locals at the scene said they are not surprised another accident has happened on the notorious road, which previously claimed a young life.

Just three years ago, Sophie Geddes, 16, passed away after being struck by a motor on the same road at the junction with Garscadden Road.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "I didn't hear or see anything about the boy's accident, I hope he's okay.

"It's a really busy road with bad junctions. 

"It was along here that a young girl was killed too."

Another added: "People have been talking about this road for years. The polis are always catching people speeding."

Following Sophie's death, calls were made for action to be taken about speeding drivers on the street after a string of incidents.

Some motorists were caught travelling at more than 90mph in the 30mph zone.

The incident is just the latest in the city involving pedestrians being hit by vehicles.  

Several tragedies since the beginning of 2023 have resulted in motorists, pedestrians and cyclists losing their lives on the city’s roads.

The Glasgow Times has reported 14 people – including two children – to have lost their lives.

John Robertson was killed after being hit by a bus while crossing the road on Finnieston's Argyle Street in June while 13-year-old Artian Lushaku passed away after being struck by a car on Balmore Road in May. 

Earlier this month, Christopher Hanton, from the Chryston area, was killed after he was hit in the city centre.
