Is this democratic?

There are nearly 46 million people registered to vote in the UK and apparently another 8 million who couldn’t be bothered to register – total, over 53 million.

Brexit’s 17.4 million people represents about 38% of those registered to vote and 32.3 % of the voting age population. Is this democratic ? Or put it another way, less than 26% of the total population (67million) is claiming a democratic right to determine the future of the nation.

Too much to lose

When the nation voted to leave the European Union they did not have a clue of the implications or repercussions involved.

Rather than give us a fair deal, the EU closed ranks on us. I therefore sincerely hope the Scottish people who may vote for independence know the implications of voting to leave the UK. Remember this three-year fiasco. Rest assured the rest of the UK will not do Scotland any favours.

Don’t ask the SNP what will we gain (like Boris they’ll promise you everything) but rather, what will we lose!

Capitalism at its worst

I can understand Richard Low’s concerns regarding the decision not to bail out Thomas Cook (September 25). However, it has to be remembered that the directors and bosses of this company sneaked out the back door with multi-million pound payouts and that the company were still taking bookings from customers at midnight before announcing the closure at 2am. My sympathies are with the staff and customers left out of pocket but this is just another example of capitalism at its worst.

Clean-up priorities

I heartily agree with letter regarding the state of Glasgow. A lovely dear green place is really getting spoiled.

I note Argyle Street has lovely new wooden benches, with the old metal ones removed. This exercise looked costly. While the new benches look smart, with all the other issues regarding litter, weeds and general dilapidation, we cannot afford luxuries like this!
