PAT CRERAND played for Celtic for six years before moving to Manchester United in 1963 and played in their 1968 European Cup-winning side...

BERTIE THE HOOPS FAN (Cambuslang) – I read in your column recently about Old Firm players who had previously played in the Juniors. It was very interesting, but can you tell me which Junior club (if any) my favourite player Pat Crerand played for?

Pat had a spell with now-defunct Duntocher Hibs before joining Celtic.

J. SHAW (Swinton) - Could you settle an argument regarding Rangers' motto on the club crest? On the crest the motto is 'Ready', but was this changed in the Sixties from 'Aye Ready' to 'Ready' or has it always been 'Ready'? If it was changed, could you give the reason for the change and the year it was altered?

Originally the motto was 'Aye Work Awa' which then changed to 'Ready Aye Ready'.

It then changed to 'Aye Ready' and finally in 1966 to 'Ready'.

The change in 1966 was explained as a modernising move.

R. McIVOR (Paisley) – In 1949 Scotland beat Ireland in Belfast 8-2 and East Fife centre-forward Morris scored a hat-trick. On his one and only game for Scotland. Can you tell me who the other Scotland scorers were?

On October 1, 1949, Scotland's eight goals came from the five forwards.

Waddell (2), Mason (1), Morris (3), Steel (1) and Reilly (1).

JOHN (Paisley) – A Morton supporter friend of mine tells me that in 1961 Morton signed three members of the Scotland 1958 World Cup squad when Morton were bottom of the old Second Division. Is he correct?

Not quite. Morton did indeed finish rock bottom of the Scottish League in season 1960/61.

For the beginning of the 1961/62 season they signed Doug Cowie and Archie Robertson who had played in the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden in 1958.

Bobby Evans did not sign for Ton until the following season.

JIM (Bellahouston) – Can you tell me who was the first Scottish Junior FA player to play for the Scotland Amateur International team?

We believe his name was William Stirling McDerment who played for Johnstone Burgh.

He played at right-half for Scotland against England at Hampden Park on March 18, 1961. The game ended in a 2-2 draw.

He went on to play for Leicester City, Luton Town, Notts County, Morton and St Mirren.
