COLIN STEIN will be remembered for scoring in Rangers’ greatest ever triumph when beating Moscow Dynamo 3-2 in the European Cup-Winners’ Cup Final in Barcelona in 1972, but it didn’t take him long to hit the goal trail when he joined the Ibrox club from Hibernian in 1968…

JOHN (Craigton) – My pal tells me that Colin Stein scored eight goals in his first three games for Rangers. Can you provide the details?

Colin Stein was bought from Hibernian in October 1968 for £100,000, the first six-figure transfer between Scottish clubs.

His impact was sensational at Ibrox. In his debut game he scored a hat-trick in a 5-1 League win at Arbroath and followed that up by scoring another treble a week later in his first home game in a 6-1 victory over his old club Hibs.

A few days later he scored a double in a 3-0 away Fairs Cup win against Dundalk.

DAVID (Bridge of Allan) – Can you tell me who was the Hibs goalkeeper in 1985 when they drew with Celtic 4-4 in the Skol Cup semi-final. I believe Hibs won on penalties.

This match was on September 4, 1985, and after extra-time it finished 4-4.

The match then went to penalties. The Hibs keeper was Alan Rough and he saved two penalties from Aitken and Grant of Celtic.

At one stage it was 3-3 when Cowan scored for Hibs and it was O’Leary for Celtic with the final kick and he put it over the bar, so the hero was keeper Alan Rough.

HAMISH DOYLE (Stirling) – I seem to remember Stirling Albion celebrating their 40th Anniversary in 1985 with a game against a Celtic XI. I think it ended in a 1-1 draw. How strong was the Celtic side?

The teams lined up:

Stirling Albion – Graham, Dawson, Spence, Walker, McTeague, Maxwell, McCulley (Anderson), Hoggan, Irvine, Grant, Ormond (Thompson).

Celtic – Latchford, W McStay, McGrain, Grant, McGugan, Coyle, Shepherd, McClair, McGhee, McKechnie (McGuire), Archdeacon.

This seems to be a fairly strong Celtic side. Willie Irvine scored for Stirling, Mark McGhee scored for Celtic.
