Mikael Lustig is expected to commit his future to Celtic this week with long term negotiations believed set to reach a positive conclusion.

The 30-year-old Swedish internationalist was signed by Neil Lennon in 2012 from Rosenborg and has been a mainstay of the Hoops defence.

Talks regarding a contract extension have been ongoing for the past few months with the player who is out of contract at the end of the season, but Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has previously spoken of his desire to keep the right-back at the club, citing him as one of the key members of his team.

The news will be met with satisfaction from Rodgers who told journalists last month that: “Mikael’s one I definitely want to keep. The club is in discussions with his agent.

“I think he wants to stay. It’s probably his last major contract and when you get to that age, you want to make sure everything is right. It has to be right for you.

“He wants to be here and he knows I want him here. It’s relaxed, there’s no drama.

“He’s an important player for us, one of the pillars of the group. In any squad, there are four or five players and he’s definitely one.

“He’s a great character and his commitment to training is fantastic. He’s a fun guy, but he knows when to focus and he’s up for every single game. He’s been excellent since I came in.”

Meanwhile, former Hoops boss Neil Lennon has backed Celtic to go through the domestic season undefeated this term.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have dropped just two points so far, a blip that came against Inverness with a 2-2 draw in the Highlands.

Lennon was part of the playing side under Martin O’Neill that set a record of winning 25 league games in succession in season 2003-04 – the greatest team the Northern Irishman believes he played in – and he believes the current Celtic side are capable of eclipsing that statistic.

Rodgers side have currently gone 24 games unbeaten so far and have won their last 15 league games.

They are within three matches of equalling the club's 'Lisbon Lions' class of 1966-67 that went 26 domestic matches unbeaten at the start of the season and Lennon believes there is little evidence that anyone can live with Celtic in the top flight.

“Anything that anyone throws at them domestically they seem to be able to handle no problem,” he said. “ It is a very difficult thing to do but you would have to honest just now and say that it doesn’t look beyond them because not many teams can live with them.

“He has so many different ways of playing and the movement and the verve and the goals they are scoring I think has made them pretty fantastic to watch."
