THIS week our team of sports writers will be providing their assessment of the season so far for all 12 Ladbrokes Premiership clubs.
Keep an eye on the Herald and Evening Times websites for our mid-season reviews throughout the week.
The season so far
With two wins over Aberdeen, successes away to Hearts and Hibernian and a point at Celtic to their credit, you would think Rangers should be fairly pleased with their efforts to date. That isn’t the case, though. A campaign that started with defeat to Progres and saw Pedro Caixinha sacked has also brought home defeats to Hamilton and St Johnstone and there is plenty of room for improvement.
Best player
Alfredo Morelos has quickly become a firm favourite with the Ibrox crowd and much is expected of the striker going forward. His 12 goals to date is an impressive return and the Colombian is certainly one of the few positives so far this term.
Star signing
Ryan Jack has slotted into the midfield with ease since moving from Aberdeen but Morelos has made a bigger impact and gets the nod. The 20 goal barrier should certainly be in his sights going into the second half of the season.
Biggest flop
There are a few runners and riders here but Carlos Pena picks up the unwanted gong. Five goals from 14 games isn’t the worst return but the Mexican hasn’t proven to be value for money and has no long-term future at Ibrox. A costly mistake for Rangers.
What will the second half of the season bring?
Rangers need to produce the levels of performance they are capable of on a more regular basis. If they can do that, then there is no reason why Graeme Murty can’t lead them to second place and have a crack at the Scottish Cup.
