Patrick Roberts is expected to step up his recovery this week as he takes part in a development game.

It has been a frustrating season for the winger who has missed two chunks because of injury.

In many ways I am not sure that he was as missed as he might have been had James Forrest not played as well as he has.

Forrest’s form has made it less of an issue that Roberts has been sidelined although having him fit and back in the team would give some welcome options.

Part of the reason why it has been so disjointed this season definitely owes something to the sheer volume of injuries that Celtic have had. It started in the qualification campaign and it seems to have been a recurring theme every week.

However, with Tom Rogic (inset) back in – and I thought he made a bit of an impact when he came on after the break the other night in St Petersburg – and Roberts on his way back, then there is a glimpse of the possibility of getting a fully fit squad back.

Stuart Armstrong should be aiming for a return in the next few weeks while it might be that we get to see what Marvin Compper offers too.

The defender has been unlucky since his arrival but as the season reaches its finale you would like to think that Celtic can get everyone fully fit and available.

If that happens then you might see the level of performance lift with the competition in the squad for places.
