GREGOR Townsend has named six uncapped players in his squad for Scotland's Summer Tour, while a number of established stars have been rested.

Edinburgh pair Lewis Carmichael and Jamie Ritchie, the Glasgow trio of Matt Fagerson, George Horne and Adam Hastings and Harlequins midfielder James Lang could make their international bows in the clashes against Canada, USA and Argentina.

Edinburgh hooker Stuart McInally has been rewarded for a superb season by being named as captain in the absence of regular skipper John Barclay and his deputy Greig Laidlaw.

Finn Russell, Tommy Seymour, Sean Maitland, Jonny Gray and Ryan Wilson are among the established Scotland regulars to be left out of the 33-man squad, while those absent through injury include centre Huw Jones, flanker Hamish Watson and prop WP Nel.

Townsend said: “There are twin goals for this tour - the first is to build on the work we’ve done so far this season and finish with improved performances.

"We also have the Rugby World Cup in our thoughts, as this will be our last tour before we leave for Japan next year.

“Touring and staying together for four weeks and experiencing different environments will be very informative - seeing how players get on with each other, how much they improve and how they rise to each challenge we face on tour.”

The Scots begin against Canada in Edmonton on Saturday 9 June before facing USA in Houston on 16 June.

Argentina will provide the final opposition of the tour at the Estadio Centenario on the weekend of 22 June.
