RANGERS have confirmed the loan signing of Roma striker Umar Sadiq.

The 21-year-old becomes Steven Gerrard's ninth summer recruit after agreeing a season-long loan deal with the Ibrox club on Tuesday.

His arrival followed that of midfielder Lassana Coulibaly, who put pen to paper on a year-long move from French side Angers earlier in the day.

Sadiq, who joined the Serie A giants from Spezia for around £2 million two years ago, spent last season on loan at Torino and Eredivisie outfit NAC Breda.

The Nigerian failed to make an impact during the first half of the campaign in Turin, but finished the season strongly with five goals in 12 games in the Netherlands.

He was also a member of the Nigerian Olympic team during the 2016 Olympics and scored four goals to help the Super Eagles to the bronze medal.

Competitive action begins for Rangers on Thursday with the visit of Macedonian side FK Shkupi in the Europa League first qualifying round.

Sadiq will be available to feature in the game if he is registered before the deadline of midnight on Wednesday.

He joins a much-changed Gers squad with Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Scott Arfield, Jon Flanagan, Allan McGregor and Ovie Ejaria all targeting a competitive debut.

Jamie Murphy was also brought in on a permanent deal earlier this summer after spending the second half of last season on loan in Glasgow from Brighton.
