THERE has been a lot of talk about the standard of refereeing in Scotland once again over the last few days.

A number of decisions have upset managers, players and supporters across the country.

And one of the solutions that people are putting forward is for the Premiership to follow a few other leagues around the world and use technology to help our officials in their decision making process.

I think the VAR system would be an amazing thing to have in the Scottish game but unfortunately I can’t see it happening any time soon.

The money involved would just make it too expensive to roll out and unless we got funding from somewhere, and I can’t think where, then I don’t see it coming in.

There are people calling for a change now that decisions are going against them but you have to remember that it works both ways and you might start not getting things that you are right now.

It would be a lot cleaner playing field but you have to remember there are logistics that need to be thought of. It is not just a case of having cameras at games.

You need a team of referees to look at the decisions for starters and they need to be paid for as well.

For that reason, I can’t see it happening in the near future.

I think one change that could be made changed would be to have the referees going full-time, like they are in England.

That wouldn’t be as expensive as the VAR but it would give them more training and allow them to be better prepared. That could take them out of the spotlight a bit.

Even if they were full-time, they are still going to make mistakes, like every human being in the world.

But it would give them a better chance of improving themselves and it would surely raise the standards across the board if they were able to dedicate more time to the job.

Of course, we would need funding for that as well and that makes the whole issue difficult to solve.
