The one thing you can say about Leigh Griffiths is that he scores goals. There are not too many people in Celtic’s history who have hit the 100-mark for the club and that tells you something about what he has got. I don’t know that he has done enough to convince Brendan Rodgers that he is deserving of the number one shirt for Celtic - but put it this way he has certainly given him something to think about. I think it is with some justification that you look at Griffiths and can see why he was perturbed at being put out of the Scotland starting XI. The same at Celtic as he has found himself looking in. You can’t really quibble with what Steven Naismith done when he got his chance but what you can say about Griffiths is that he always comes back. It seems to be that whenever a manager has decided that he isn’t starting on a regular basis that Griffiths has an answer with his performances on the pitch. He seems to be capable of putting a spoke into their thinking and for me the only way to do your talking is on the park. It is pointless moaning about where you should be playing or why you should be playing. The only way to stake your claim is by getting your head down and going onto the pitch. That’s the time when you show what you have got. And last night I think would have given Griffiths a fair bit of satisfaction. Aside form that, it was vital that Celtic got themselves off to a winning start. If you are going to do anything in the competition then you really need to be looking to take maximum points from your home games and then pick up what you can when you are on the road. I actually thought that the performance against Rosenborg merited the points on Thursday night. The first-half was fairly flat but Celtic dominated that second period. If anyone seemed to think that Europa League doesn’t matter either to the club then the reaction to Griffiths’ header hitting the back of the net belied that. There was a huge roar as the ball finally went in and it was important for a number of reasons. It doesn’t just get the Europa League off to a strong start but starts the momentum again for Celtic. It is a busy month in terms of league, Cup and European games and this result gives Celtic the chance to build up a head of steam now. It will be interesting to see if Griffiths gets the nod to start now tomorrow at Rugby Park. The one thing that you can say about the striker is that whenever there seems to be a rebuke that comes away about upping his game, about doing more, he is up to the task of responding. The other aspect of note is how fondly he is regarded by the Celtic support. He has a little bit of devilment in him that supporters respond to but in my own experience that counts for very little if you are not going out and doing the business on the park. Ultimately that is what endears you to those who turn up every week. He has proved himself at Celtic so I don’t think it is a case that he needs to kick on but there is no doubt that he will have it in his mind that he wants to be seen as the top striker at the club. The other one who impressed me on Thursday night was Dedryck Boyata. He has come back into the team after a significant bit of unrest and I don’t think he has put a foot wrong since. He got up really well to get his head on the ball that led to Griffiths scoring and it augers well that there has been some defensive calm over recent weeks. Again, that is something that you want to build on because that gives the entire team a bit of confidence when you know that there is solidity at the back.
