COMPLACENCY was a word hammered into me during my time at Rangers.

It simply wasn’t allowed and I’m sure Steven Gerrard has the same school of thought as Walter Smith.

Just because Rangers have strung together a few good results does not mean they can take any team, and I do mean any team, lightly or with less than a 100 per cent attitude.

And that brings me to Ayr United.

The Championship leaders head to Ibrox tomorrow for the Betfred Cup and they will make it hard for Rangers.

Ian McCall’s team are scoring goals for fun - the lad Lawrence Shankland is having a ridiculously good season - and won’t have any fear about facing Rangers.

Should we win, then it’s a semi-final and one game away from the final which is where this football club should always be.

Without getting carried away, what a boost it would give everyone connected to Rangers if they could end 2018, a year not without its disappointments, with the first trophy since 2011.

To do that, they must make sure they don’t give Ayr any encouragement. Players can sense when the ‘big team’ don’t fancy it and that’s when shocks happen.

I take Rangers to win, but Ayr are no pushovers.
