ALLAN MCGREGOR Reclaimed his place between the sticks after missing out against Kilmarnock in midweek and made vital stops from McShane and Jackson in the first half. Didn’t have as much to do after the break as St Mirren toiled. 7

JAMES TAVERNIER Was kept honest by the threat of Edwards down the Saints’ left early on and couldn’t really make his presence felt as an attacking force. Should have done better in the final third at times but played his part for the Gers. 7

CONNOR GOLDSON Was the better of the two centre backs during the first half as Rangers coped relatively easily with a poor St Mirren attack. Spurned a glorious chance as he failed to properly connect with a Halliday corner then helped Rangers get over the winning line. 7

JOE WORRALL Has been questioned by supporters after an inconsistent run and wasn’t at his best in the first half as he needlessly lost the ball on a handful of occasions. Quieter in the second period but not overly impressive. 6

ANDY HALLIDAY Is becoming accustomed to filling in at left-back and was again given the nod over Jon Flanagan. Stuck to the task well and certainly didn’t let his manager down as he looked to get forward as often as possible. 7

RYAN JACK Back in the starting line-up to play a crucial role in a hard-fought midfield battle and was booked for a late challenge on Mullen after half an hour. Another solid and industrious showing. 7

OVIE EJARIA Saw a lot of the ball in the opening stages and looked threatening at times as he attempted to break through the Saints defence. Faded as the half went on and couldn’t assert himself on proceedings after the break. 6

SCOTT ARFIELD Has the quality to cause teams plenty of problems but couldn’t do it often enough in a tight first half here. Was later denied in the penalty box scramble and can’t be faulted for effort. 7

EROS GREZDA Winger hasn’t had many chances to show what he can do for the Gers and was on the fringes during the first 45 minutes here. Hit the post with a low effort just before being replaced but could have no complaints about an early exit from the action. 5

RYAN KENT Switched to the right flank initially before reverting back to the left late in the first half and came close with a low strike. Looked more threatening from there as the game wore on. 7

ALFREDO MORELOS Striker was starved of service for much of a frustrating first half as he struggled to get involved. Still put in a shift, though, and got his reward with a clinical finish in the closing stages. 8

Substitutes:

DANIEL CANDEIAS (for Grezda) Added an urgency to Rangers’ play as soon as he was introduced and turned out to be the match winner. Only he will know if he meant the strike that beat Samson from distance and was rightly bemused by his red card. 7

JORDAN ROSSITER (for Ejaria) Given a run-out in the final minutes as Gerrard’s side clinched the win. 2
