TONY Fitzpatrick, the St Mirren chief executive, has vowed to identify and ban the supporter who threw a coin at Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos on Saturday - as it emerged that the Paisley side's goalkeeper Craig Samson was also struck by loose change thrown onto the pitch by fans during the same game.

While TV footage showed the Colombian international being struck by the missile thrown from the home area of the stadium as he celebrated scoring an injury-time goal in the 2-0 victory at the Simple Digital Arena, former St Mirren and Rangers striker Steven Thompson claimed on BBC Sportscene yesterday that his former team-mate had informed him that "three or four coins", thrown by the away fans behind his goal, were also in his goalmouth after the match and that he was struck by one of them. The latest of a spate of such incidents, this all occurred just three days after Hibs head coach Neil Lennon was struck by a coin in the dugout during the final moments of the goalless draw at the home of rivals Hearts, an attack which has put the idea of strict liability back on the agenda.

“It’s unacceptable and we will find out [who did it],” said Fitzpatrick. “The ground is full of CCTV and he will be banned - we don’t want people like that at the games. But what can we do? We can impose a ban but we can’t stop it, that’s not the club’s responsibility.”

Police Scotland confirmed they will pore over footage of the incident. “No reports were made to police of coins being thrown at players at the game by either Club, players or stewards,” a spokesman said. “However, having been made aware of the video footage, the incident will be investigated.”
