I genuinely can’t believe the official SFA explanation for the Daniel Candeias red card at St Mirren. For me, this is the lowest of the low for our game. It is absolutely farcical and it makes Scottish football look stupid all over the world.

The first booking, he scores a goal in front of his own fans and he gets booked for celebrating. That’s fine, you go off the park, you know the rules, you take the booking and that’s all acceptable.

But the second one for blowing kisses at the opposition? What is the game coming to in this country when you can get booked for that?

We’ve got players tying scarves to goalposts, we’ve got strikers showing off their big bellies to opposition fans after scoring, but that is all part of our game. They are trying to take the fun out of football..

What’s next? Could it be that heaven forbid, somebody might stick their tongue out at a player and get banned for the season? It seems as if the authorities are going out of their way to suck every last bit of enjoyment out of the game for players and more importantly, for the paying supporters.

The biggest buzz you ever get at any level in football is when you score a goal. Your emotions are all over the place. I don’t care if you are 50 years old and playing five-a-sides, when you score a goal you get that buzz, so you can only imagine what it is like for professionals at the top level.

What are they supposed to do? It was a goal in the 92nd minute of the match to seal a crucial three points, and you are booking somebody for blowing kisses? Give me a break.

I don’t even think the referee saw it. Perhaps he has gone to his assistant, and if that is the case, I’d love to know what he said.

What is even more worrying is that the tribunal – whoever is on at – have bought all of this and decided that it did merit a yellow card. What are they thinking? He got assaulted by Anton Ferdinand and that got the St Mirren player a booking, are they saying that the offences were equal?

It’s absolutely ridiculous, and the sad thing is that they have set a precedent now. Wait and see, every single person that scores a goal from now on the opposition fans will be looking at the player and his teammates to see if he does anything at all towards the crowd or towards one of their players.

It’s carte blanche for the punters and TV pundits to scrutinise absolutely every move. People will be pulling players up for the littlest things, because if you can be booked for blowing kisses, then it’s open season.

Of all of the guilty parties, the one that disappoints me most is Willie Collum. He will have watched it on the television numerous times, and to come up with this ludicrous, lame excuse almost two weeks after the event is appalling.

This is a man that is refereeing in the Champions League for crying out loud, and he can’t even hold his hands up and admit he might have got a decision wrong. If he did that, apologised for his mistake, then fine. He would get far more respect. But to come out with this lousy excuse is laughable. It is utter nonsense and the governing bodies that run our game have taken us into the gutter. We’re a laughing stock.

The bigger picture for Candeias is that he lost his place for the Motherwell game, and the players who came in were outstanding as they won 7-1. He may not now get back into the side, so he’s lost his jersey over a decision that is farcical. The whole affair is bizarre, absolutely crazy.

Look at Scott Brown with El Hadji-Diouf a few years back. I think that sort of thing is great, and it’s all part of the fun of the game and the release of elation when you score a goal.

The only advice I can offer players now is that when they score a goal, just keep your arms down by your side, nobody say anything and walk right back and get the game started again. The killjoys have taken over.
