TIME is relentlessly marching on as the January transfer deadline approaches closer and closer. Clubs have until 11pm on Thursday night to conclude any deals and we can expect to see the usual last-minute wheeling and dealing as managers look to fine-tune their squads for the league run-in.

We’ve already seen a few high-profile signings make their way to Scotland. Celtic have brought in Oli Burke and Timothy Weah on loan from West Bromwich Albion and Paris Saint Germain respectively, and Brendan Rodgers has further bolstered his front line with the addition of Ivorian striker Vakoun Issouf Bayo.

Across Glasgow, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been busy too. Veterans with plenty of experience have moved to Ibrox in the form of Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis, while Kilmarnock’s Jordan Jones and Dundee’s Glen Kamara have been signed on pre-contract agreements.

Elsewhere in Scotland’s top flight, Ross McCormack has rejoined Motherwell, Ryan Gauld is back in Scotland and will play for Hibernian until the end of the season, Aberdeen poached Greg Stewart from Aberdeen while Livingston recruited Chris Erskine from Championship strugglers Partick Thistle.

With time ticking away until the window shuts, we’ve taken a look at some of the deals that could still go ahead before the deadline. Most clubs have been fairly prompt about getting their business done early, but we can expect to see a few last-minute deals as panic sets in.

CELTIC

Much of Celtic’s transfer business has been focussed on reinforcing the attack and the three signings made so far will no doubt add more of a goal threat to the Parkhead club. As well as Weah, Bayo and Burke, negotiations are ongoing with Ukrainian side Karpaty Lviv to bring right winger Maryan Shved to Glasgow’s east end, with the expectation that the 21-year-old will spend the remainder of the season in his homeland before joining up with the champions.

One area of the pitch still requires an upgrade, however. Right back has been an issue for Celtic over the past few seasons and rumours are still circulating that Rodgers may enter the market for the right player. Atalanta’s Timothy Castagne ruled out a move to the Premiership, saying that he sees his future in the Bundesliga or the Premier League, but one player who could join the Celtic ranks is Norwegian full back Omar Elabdellaoui.

The 27-year-old currently plies his trade in Greece for Olympiacos, but Celtic have been continually linked with the right-sided defender throughout the transfer window. Any deal is likely to cost upwards of £4 million and is certainly one to watch going into the last few days of the month. A loan move for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has also been floated and the Scotland international could move to Celtic Park before the window closes on Thursday night.

RANGERS

Defoe and Davis represent the bulk of Rangers’ January transfer activity and with American internationalist Matt Polster also moving to Ibrox, Gerrard appears to have a well-balanced squad at his disposal. Further signings are unlikely, but that isn’t to say that Rangers might not be involved in the final days of the window.

Gerrard has already refuted suggestions that either Alfredo Morelos or James Tavernier could leave the club this month, but, as Matthew Lindsay has pointed out, every player has his price and Rangers could find themselves faced with a bid that is simply too good to turn down. Rangers captain Tavernier has been linked with a move to Southampton, but Gerrard has said that the Premier League side have privately assured him that they are not interested in the right back.

Morelos has been gaining admirers and with 21 goals to the Colombian’s name already this season it isn’t difficult to see why. The speculation that has surrounded the 22-year-old has been seemingly omnipresent but it would likely take a large bid to secure his services.

Gerrard is reportedly interested in bringing in Kamara a little earlier than planned and Rangers could make a move for the Dundee midfielder before the window closes. With the 23-year-old Finn having already agreed to join the club in the summer, any deal would likely be relatively cheap. Aside from this, we shouldn’t expect to see many players signing at Ibrox over the next couple of days.

HIBERNIAN

With Jamie Maclaren seemingly on his way to Australia, Hibernian could be in the market for another striker to provide backup to Florian Kamberi and Oli Shaw. Having said that, the Leith club currently have to deal with the more pressing issue of finding a new manager after Neil Lennon was suspended by the club on Friday night.

Gordon Strachan is the current favourite to take over at Easter Road and because of the uncertainty surrounding the Hibernian management, we shouldn’t expect to see the club involved in too much transfer activity. But with Maclaren likely to leave and Martin Boyle out injured, Hibs could probably use the addition of another forward. Ryan Gauld has already moved to Edinburgh and with Scott Allan having agreed a move when his contract expires in the summer, it’s possible that the playmaker could move to Easter Road before 11pm on Thursday.

And the rest…

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright has confirmed that the club have knocked back a bid from Barnsley for centre back Jason Kerr but the English Championship side could make an improved offer for the 21-year-old. Wright revealed the bid was in the region of £100,000 but said that “Jason is not for sale” and hopes the defender will sign a contract extension in the near future.

Aberdeen look set to miss out on Lewis Morgan as the Celtic winger edges closer to a loan move to Southampton to work under his former manager Jack Ross. If Aberdeen end up missing out on the 22-year-old, Derek McInnes may turn his attention elsewhere in his bid to sign another attacking midfielder.

Motherwell striker David Turnbull has caught the eye of a few English Championship clubs and could move before the window closes, but manager Stephen Robinson is hopeful of tying the 19-year-old down on a longer contract.
