STEVEN GERRARD has had two Old Firm games and seen his side produce two very different performances and earn two very different results so far.

It is fascinating to think how he will approach the third game with Celtic on Sunday and I would love to know how he is going to go about it.

If you look at the win at Ibrox, that came from Rangers starting on the front foot, being aggressive, getting the crowd behind them by winning their tackles. They set the tempo and they never looked back.

But that was in stark contrast to the game at Celtic Park earlier in the season when Rangers never really got going. They were better in the second half, but didn’t do enough to take anything from it.

If you are an opposition side going to Ibrox or Parkhead, you have to win your tackles early doors, you have to try and frustrate the players and the get the fans to turn on them.

I think Steven will look at how well things worked for Rangers in the December game and try to replicate that this weekend. That is the kind of approach and game plan I expect to see from Rangers.

I would be surprised if he didn’t set out to press high, get in Celtic’s faces and win the battle by being aggressive with and without the ball.

When Rangers lost to Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup, I don’t think they were aggressive enough in midfield.

So I can see Ross McCrorie coming into the team to add that bit of needle. He covers the ground well, he matches his runners and he is strong in the tackle.

He is a really disciplined football player and character and he is good in the air so he can do his bit at set plays, both for and against. I think he could be one of the main men to help Rangers get a performance and a result on the day.

Parkhead is a very, very hard place to go to and play. The atmosphere in Old Firm fixtures is always incredible and Rangers will face a proven Celtic side.

At the end of the day, it is who wants to win it the most. That it was I learned from the Old Firm games that I played in.

You have to start well, the first goal is really important in these games, and it is just 90 minutes of out-running your opponent, being more aggressive than your opponent and making sure you win your individual battle.

If you are not having a good game, you have to make sure that the guy you are playing against doesn’t have a good game either. That is back to basics and doing your job right.

You have to try and blank out the atmosphere because the Celtic fans, like the Rangers supporters are at Ibrox, can be like a twelfth man. It is a game for players that are mentally strong, that are up for the fight.

Steven will know that from his derby experiences down south and he has had two Old Firms as a manager now. He will know what it takes and hopefully his side can produce on the day.

Rangers haven’t really been able to ask questions of Celtic and apply real, sustained pressure. It might be too late for that this season, and the gap is there for everyone to see.

For the manager and the players, it is about trying to put as much pressure on Celtic as possible because, for the last five, six years, they have had it all their own way and it has been pretty plain sailing.

I am not going to say that if Rangers win on Sunday they will go on and win the league, but they will apply a wee bit of pressure. Rangers can only really look at themselves and take care of their business and Sunday is a huge game for them.
