I feel sorry for Alex McLeish.

But his second stint as Scotland manager just hasn’t worked out the way he wanted it to, or the way that the country needed it to.

Alex was approached and asked if he wanted to come back and he was delighted to go back in and help his country out again.

He has been in charge of the team for their worst result ever and worst performance ever over in Kazakhstan last week unfortunately.

The fans weren’t slow in voicing their anger that night, and that continued during the win over San Marino as well.

Once the supporters get on your back, it is so difficult to turn things around and change minds.

If we are honest, the majority of the Tartan Army didn’t want Alex as manager in the first place and events of the last few days have proven to be the opportunity for them to make their feelings heard once again.

They wanted him out and once the Scottish FA start getting stick, you know what will happen.

The board at Hampden don’t want the flak directed at them so they look to appease the supporters by getting rid of the manager.

It is a real shame for Alex. But he is old enough and wise enough to know that if you don’t get results then you will be under severe pressure.

The problem for the SFA will quickly become who is next. Where do they turn to now for a boss?

This isn’t the greatest squad of players we have ever had and whoever comes in has a real task to turn things around in the group.

I am disappointed for Alex. He gave it his best shot and it just hasn’t worked but he should leave with everyone’s best wishes.
