JERMAIN DEFOE is confident Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos will learn from his mistakes after being hit by another Scottish FA suspension this week.

The Colombian will miss a total of four games for lashing out at Celtic captain Scott Brown.

Defoe replaced his fellow forward for the midweek victory over Hearts and scored his sixth goal for Steven Gerrard’s side.

Now he hopes Morelos realises the errors of his ways at Ibrox.

He said: “You think about the best forwards. Wayne Rooney had it when he was young and I think it is a part of growing up.

“As you get older, you become more experienced and you realise that you don’t really need to get involved. What I would say is that when you are a threat, a top player, defenders don’t want to play against you and try and provoke you and sometimes you react.

“I had a little bit of that when I was at West Ham when I was young, I used to get involved, got sent off a few times and when you get older you try and switch off and focus on the games, focus on scoring goals. With Alfredo, I’m sure he will blank it out and he will become better at that.

“I just wanted to stay on the pitch. You were missing games and opportunities to score goals, it was as simple as that. Even on [Wednesday night], Alfredo is in the changing room and you can see it in his body language that he is gutted that he couldn’t be involved because he loves football.

“As a goal scorer, he wants to play, he wants to score goals. He is an international, so if you are getting sent off and are missing games, you are missing opportunities to get goals.

“He has scored 29 goals and could finish the season with 30. Of course he is going to be frustrated but he will learn.”
