THE Celtic team of the 1971/72 season was, I have to say with all modesty, a fairly good one.

We won the First Division title, which made it seven in a row, we beat Rangers four times out of four, three of the games coming at Ibrox, a superb Hibernian side were thrashed 6-1 in the Scottish Cup final and we were denied a third European Cup final by our old friends Inter Milan who beat us in the semi-final on penalties.

A young player by the name of Kenny Dalglish (whatever happened to him?) scored his first goal in Celtic colours - in an Old Firm game.

The likes of Danny McGrain, Lou Macari and my great pal George Connelly showed everyone just how good they were.

We played fantastic football. Lions such as Billy McNeill, Bobby Murdoch,Bobby Lennox and wee Jinky were still around.

When you add in Dixie Deans, Harry Hood and Tom Callaghan, that is some Celtic team.

It was, of course, two points for a win back then and we finished ten ahead of Aberdeen in second place and 16 ahead of Rangers who finished third. We lost two games in the league and none in regular time over our European Cup run.

And we lost 4-1 in the League Cup final to Partick Thistle!

I played that day and was as helpless as everyone else to stop Thistle scoring four goals in the first-half. Fair play to them. They deserted their day.

What that shows is even the very best team can have a bad day and lose a tie or even the final itself.

The Celtic I played in were the best in Scotland, one of the best in Europe, and yet we had our bad days in both cup competitions.

A silly mistake, a bad refereeing decision, Thistle getting four past you before you've had a touch - these things happen.

However, they haven't happened to this Celtic team for three seasons now.

That's 26 domestic cup games and 26 wins. It's taken us to six finals out of six. This is remarkable.

Under Brendan Rodgers, they have had bad days at Tynecastle, Rugby Park a couple of times and Ibrox in December.

But come a cup tie and this group make sure the job gets done. I can't remember a game in that run when I genuinely thought we would lose.

The Celtic supporters I hope know what they are watching right now. These are wonderful times for our football club.

The players are giving us so much.

Celtic are expected to win the league. But to win six cup finals in a row - I hope - was surely past everyone's expectations.

We lost four League Cup finals in a row to Rangers, thanks to a 16-year-old Derek Johnstone, Thistle. Hibs and Dundee.

Every game we were expected to win and went in as favourites.

So, for Brendan and now Neil Lennon to lead the players successfully through so many tricky ties with players who have played maybe a dozen more games than the opposition, is something else.

A wonderful achievement. This is history. Please, folks, enjoy all of this while we can.

A treble Treble is something I never believed any team would be capable of for the examples I've given.

There are too many things that go wrong - should go wrong.

If we beat Hearts on of all days May 25, this feat will be remembered long after all these players have retired.

This might never happen again.
