LIKE most people, I didn’t see a lot of Jake Hastie when he was on loan at Airdrieonians last season or at Alloa during the first half of the campaign.

He only really came to the public attention when he went back to Motherwell and really burst onto scene at Fir Park.

When he has been playing for Stephen Robinson’s side, he has certainly impressed.

And that has been enough to convince Rangers to bring him to Ibrox this summer. Hastie signed a four-year deal this week and I hope the move works out well for him.

He is quick, some of the goals he has scored have been sensational and he has grown up a lot in a couple of months.

It is a gamble that Rangers are taking because we don’t know if he has that level of consistency required in him. Only time will tell.

He will start in pre-season and has a chance to impress Steven Gerrard straight away. If he plays well, he will be in the side and it is up to him to take any opportunity he gets.

People have said that he shouldn’t have made the move and that it is too early for him to join Rangers.

It is fine saying he should have another year at Motherwell, but what if he loses form? Or what if he has a really bad injury and the big move suddenly passes him by?

I have always said that if you get a chance to move to a bigger club then you have to take it.

You can only improve and learn playing alongside better players and even if it doesn’t work for you there, you move on. You never know if you will get a chance like that again.

Jake has done the right thing. Good luck to the lad and hopefully Rangers get the best out of him.
