STEVEN Davis revealed last night that he is driven by a desire to win another trophy in the game before he retires and reckons Steven Gerrard can convince more big-name players from the FA Premier League to buy into that quest. After a slow start to his second coming as a Rangers player, the Northern Irish midfielder has looked the part in a deeper role during the club’s recent winning run. No wonder Steven Gerrard said yesterday it was his job to ensure he is in the same form at the start of next season and keep him in this condition for the remainder of the campaign.

“For me, this is the place I always wanted to come to for my own personal reasons,” said Davis. “I felt I could get back to enjoying my football here and that’s what it was about.

“I know how good this club can be when you are winning things. That was the challenge for me. I want to win something before my career finishes.

“I saw this as the opportunity. Of course, it’s a good opportunity for boys in England. Many don’t look at the Scottish game in the brightest light. But when you’re up here and involved you see how big the club is.”

The turnaround in Davis’ fortunes came when he was omitted from the entire match squad for the 1-1 Scottish Cup draw against Aberdeen. It was a rude awakening to remind him that he would have to work hard for everything he gets.

“Of course, I was surprised by that,” recalled Davis. “When you are brought into a club, you expect to come in and play. But you’ve still got to go and show that and make the manager pick you.

“Obviously it was disappointing, frustrating,” he added. “Just all the feelings you’d except to come to mind. Listen, I’ve been in the game long enough.

“I knew I just needed to get my head down. So I worked away. I had conversations with the manager as well that will stay between us.

“He was quite open with me and I was quite open with him. There weren’t any issues there.

“I believed in the quality I’ve got and that I could make a good impact. I just had to wait for that next chance and try to show the manager what I can do.”
