KRIS BOYD has called for Rangersto do the ‘right thing’ and give champions Celtica guard of honour at Ibrox.

Neil Lennon’s side clinched an eighth successive Premiership title with a 3-0 victory over Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon.

Now Celtic will play their first match as champions in the final Old Firm clash of the Premiership campaign this weekend.

The derby showdown is the penultimate fixture of the season and the Hoops will lift the silverware at home to Hearts a week on Sunday before facing the Jambos in the Scottish Cup final seven days later aiming to complete an unprecedented third Treble in three years.

Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard refused to drawn on the possibility of a guard of honour following the Light Blues’ 1-0 win over Hibernian and Rangers have no plans to mark Celtic’s title win.

But former striker Boyd believes it would be a fitting statement from Gerrard’s side to acknowledge Celtic’s success

He said: “I think it would be the right thing to do. I think Rangers would make a statement about what type of club they are if they do it.

“Over the years, it has always been the case that Rangers have held themselves in high regard and rightly so, because of the way they have conducted themselves. It would be the right thing to do and, for me, I think they should.

“At the end of the day, yeah they might be your rivals but they have won the league. Pay them the respect they deserve. As a club, I think they should make a statement and do it, yes. I get the view of the fans. I get people asking why you would want to clap your rivals onto the pitch.

“But be the bigger man, as such, and do what’s right.

“That would be to give Celtic a guard of honour on the pitch. They have won the league, they are the champions so, for me, why would you not? I understand fans might be frustrated but it’s not the end of the world if you clap someone going onto a pitch.”
