RANGERS are closing in on a deal for Rennes defender Mexer after tabling a contract offer to bring him to Ibrox this summer.

Boss Steven Gerrard flew to France to hold talks with Mexer last week after identifying the 30-year-old as the man to bolster his side for the new campaign.

Pictures of that meeting have emerged in recent days and Rangers have made an offer to secure the stopper once his deal at Roazhon Park expires at the end of the season.

Mexer could travel to Glasgow to take in Sunday’s Premiership clash with Celtic as Rangers look to record a second victory of the season over their Old Firm rivals and make it six wins on the spin after seeing off Hearts, Motherwell, Aberdeen and Hibernian in recent weeks.

The capture of the Mozambique international, who has also turned out for Sporting and Nacional after starting his career at Desportivo Maputo, would be another early boost for Gerrard ahead of a crucial summer on and off the park at Ibrox.

The Light Blues have already agreed deals for Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie, who will move from Kilmarnock and Motherwell respectively.

Steven Davis has penned a one-year deal to extend his second stint with the Gers, while a move for Greg Stewart is likely to be completed when his Birmingham City contract expires in the coming weeks.

Gerrard is on the lookout for defensive reinforcements as Joe Worrall gets set to return to Nottingham Forest after the fixtures with Celtic and Kilmarnock, while doubt remains over the future of veteran stopper Gareth McAuley.

And Mexer is the man that the Ibrox boss wants to add strength and depth to his squad as he prepares to leave Ligue 1 and make the move to the Premiership.
