WHEN you look at the job that Steve Clarke has done with Kilmarnock – a team that don’t have any superstars in it – then it is clear to see why he would be an attractive option for the Scottish FA.

Killie are well drilled, organised, the squad seems to be together and to be sitting third going into the last week of the Premiership is a fantastic achievement.

If you can do that with a team like Kilmarnock, then there is no doubt he could have an impact with Scotland if he is indeed the man that replaces Alex McLeish as manager.

We need someone who can organise, that can get a system that suits us and make sure that don’t get beat first and foremost. That is what Walter Smith did during his time in charge, and what Alex was able to do first time around.

Steve Clarke can do that. He doesn’t need a squad full of terrific individuals to make a good team and I can see why he is on the SFA list.

Personally, though, I would have gone for Scot Gemmill. There is a comparison there with Gareth Southgate at England, although I know he had other management experience with Middlesbrough.

He took the players he worked with at youth level and has got the best out of them with the full squad and I think Scot could have done that too.

He has had some fantastic results with the kids over the last few years and I think he could have made that step up. Give him a chance, let’s see what he can do and let him bring through some younger players.

If that isn’t the case, then Steve Clarke is a good fit. The fans will admire the sensational job he has done and hopefully he is the man to bring better days back to Scotland.
