THE talk of a potential move for Steven Gerrard to Derby County was quickly put to bed this week and the Rangers fans don’t have to worry about losing their boss right now.

Steven is still so highly regarded south of the border because of his career with Liverpool and England and he is a massive personality in Scottish football now as well.

With Frank Lampard’s future at Derby in doubt as Chelsea search for a new manager, you can see why Gerrard’s name would come up.

But he won’t be leaving Rangers for Derby. If he wanted to work in the Championship, I’m sure he could have done so long before now.

If Steven is successful at Rangers, there is every chance that Liverpool will come back in for him in the future and he becomes manager at Anfield at some stage.

That won’t happen until he is winning leagues and winning cups here, though. His name will be linked with jobs but he isn’t the kind of man that will leave for the first offer that comes along.

Steven would have enjoyed his first season at Ibrox, even though he will be disappointed Rangers didn’t win any silverware.

That will only have whetted his appetite for this term, though, and his work is fully underway as he looks to bring that success here.

Steven is settled in Glasgow and he loves the challenge at Rangers.

He thrives under the pressure he has here and if he handles that at Ibrox then that will undoubtedly set him up for whatever else he does in his managerial career.

If there are any clubs linked with him, that is a compliment to the job that he is doing for Rangers.

But Steven knows what the job is all about here and he wants to be the manager that takes Rangers back to the top and to the title again.

Whenever he leaves, and remember he signed a four-year contract last summer, he wants to do so with his head held high and everyone delighted with the job that he has done. That will only be the case if he is successful and he would love to win a bit of silverware in his second season at Ibrox.

He will have quickly understood what that next title win will mean to Rangers and the supporters and hopefully he has set off on that road after the squad reported for pre-season training this week.

There is every chance that Steven can win the league this season and the experience that he, his staff and the players had last year will really benefit them this term.

Rangers did well and there was progress there but second best is no use for Rangers. And it is no use for Steven or Gary McAllister.

They are winners, they always have been. And this is a club that is a winning club so this is a very important year coming up.

Never mind stopping nine-in-a-row or ten-in-a-row, Rangers need to win the title for themselves and everyone at Ibrox knows what it means to the club and the fans.

People are expecting big things of Rangers this year and that brings its own pressure on the staff and squad.

Steven knows what Scottish football is all about and the fans are excited for the new season. The tickets have sold out and there are thousands on the waiting list.

There is a belief that Rangers are going places again and Steven is the man they reckon that is going to win them the league again.

He backs the club, he believes in the club and he knows that he has to start winning trophies for Rangers.

That is the challenge that Steven signed up for and he will be as determined as ever to achieve it.
