SCOTLAND captain Rachel Corsie was scathing of the late double VAR decision which effectively cost her and her team-mates the chance to reach the last-16 at the Women’s World Cup as Shelley Kerr’s side came undone against Argentina.

In a night of incredible drama, Scotland had led through goals from Kim Little, Jen Beattie and Erin Cuthbert, only for a frantic final 16 minutes in which they squandered a lead which was set to all-but seal their passage to the last-16.

“I don’t understand it. We just weren’t going to get the decisions – that’s the bottom line,” Corsie said.

“Their first goal was a foul and the third goal is just ridiculous. It was clear for everyone to see. They’re making it up and I don’t understand how that can be allowed at this level.

“It’s so disappointing that this has ultimately cost us the tournament, but I’m proud of everybody. We gave everything and we were outstanding.

“The girls are upset but we’ll bounce back.”

With Scotland three goals to the good with just 16 minutes left to play, Milagros Menendez pulled one back for the South Americans in the 76th minute, before a Bonsegundo’s strike was tipped onto the bar by Alexander who failed to clear the rebound before it dropped over the line.

This time the scorer was Bonsegundo, with Alexander failing to hold her shot and the ball hitting the inside of the bar before dropping over the line.

An incredible second half continued when Scotland substitute Sophie Howard tackled Aidana Cometti in the box and after a lengthy VAR delay North Korean referee Ri Hyang Ok pointed to the spot.

Alexander saved Bonsegundo’s kick, but once again VAR came to the Argentine’s rescue. The goalkeeper had moved off her line and Bonsegundo converted at the second attempt.

And Kim Little, who scored her 54th goal for Scotland and her first at a World Cup, was left devastated by the final outcome, which left Scotland bottom of Group D as England and Japan went through, with Argentina also eliminated after failing to secure all three points. Indeed, the Arsenal captain insisted she would rather forget about the match altogether in the aftermath of a draw which ultimately felt like a defeat.

Little was left baffled at the decision by VAR to award the late spot-kick to Argentina, although she accepted that Alexander may have been at fault for the Argentina forward getting a second chance to level the scores at the death.

“The rules of the game are that if she steps off her line it’s a retake – we’ve seen it already in this tournament,” Little said. “But it’s the original VAR decision I’m confused about.

“For 65-70 minutes everything was great, but it’s a 90 minute game and we couldn’t see it out. I’ll come away having scored a World Cup goal, but to be honest it’s not something I’ll ever think about again.”
