STEVEN GERRARD would love to have Ryan Kent back at Rangers and the supporters would love to see him back at Ibrox next season.

But only time will tell if Liverpool are happy for him to head back to Glasgow and if Ryan himself feels it is the right place for him to continue his career.

If Ryan doesn’t sign for Rangers this summer, it would be a huge loss to the team. He was a star for us last season and that is why he was voted the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year.

Players like him, that run with the ball at their feet, that take on players and that create chances and score goals, always get the fans excited and they are worth their weight in gold.

In years gone by, there was nothing better than seeing a Willie Johnston, a Willie Henderson or a Davie Cooper running at full-backs and getting supporters excited as they drive the team on.

Ryan isn’t at that level, of course. But he is an exciting talent and Rangers would certainly miss him if he didn’t sign another deal for this coming season.

If he did, what a bonus it would be for Steven Gerrard and what a signing it would be. Hopefully this one comes to a positive conclusion from Rangers’ point of view.

When you look at it from Ryan’s perspective, you understand that it is a big decision for him in terms of his career because he has been on loan for the last few seasons and he will need answers from Liverpool before making any move.

Some of the loans worked out, some didn’t. Then he came up here and within a couple of months he had played in Europe, played in Old Firm games and played in front of 50,000 fans that loved him.

He would have enjoyed last season but he has to sit down and think this summer and consider where his career is going. Does he go on loan again? Or does he need to move on from Liverpool altogether?

He will speak to Jurgen Klopp and establish how much he is going to feature this season. Looking at the Liverpool squad, the European Champions, it is highly unlikely he is going to get a game for them.

The best he can hope for there, and this is no disrespect to Ryan because he is a smashing player, is to come off the bench here and there and maybe play in some cup games. That is down to the quality Liverpool have got.

So he has to weigh up whether he comes back to Rangers, a place he knows well and where he enjoyed it last season, or he finds another club in England and Liverpool sell him.

Rangers put four or five million quid on his value last season because of the experience he gained and the way that he played but now it is down to Ryan himself.

He can’t be guaranteed anything at Anfield so if he wants to play regular football at a high level, and potentially win some silverware, then Rangers, working under Steven, is certainly an attractive option.

Ryan loved his time up here and the European nights and the Old Firm games would have given him a taste for it. Come the end of the season, he could be a hero at Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard has made his position clear. He wants him at Rangers and he has done and said everything that he can.

It is now down to Ryan to sort out his situation at Liverpool and then decide what he wants to do next if it is clear he has to move on again.

If that is on loan again, I would imagine Rangers would be his choice and hopefully Steven and the supporters get the news that they want sooner rather than later.
