Celtic are preparing to bid around £5 million to land Huddersfield's Tommy Smith and Brentford's Romaine Sawyers, Steven Gerrard is not prepared to sell Alfredo Morelos late on in the transfer window and the Rangers manager has rebuffed an approach from Newcastle United.

Gerrard: We won’t sell Morelos late in the window

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard last night insisted Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos will only be sold this summer if the Ibrox club receive a “crazy” offer - and still have enough time to bring in a replacement. Gerrard said: “It won’t happen late. A million per cent, it won’t happen late, that’s for sure. So if someone wants to spend a lot of money on a centre forward and they want to take my centre forward, they’d have to come early.”

Qarabag have Hladky bid knocked back

Azerbaijan champions Qarabag have made St Mirren an opening offer of £200,000 for goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky, that the Paisley club have rejected. The Scottish Sun are reporting that Qarabag are now preparing a second bid for the Czech keeper, who only joined St Mirren in January.

Gerrard rejects Newcastle

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has approached Steven Gerrard over the manager’s vacancy at St James’ Park, according to the Mirror. The newspaper reckon that Gerrard turned down the opportunity to return to the Premier League as the search for Rafa Benitez’s successor continues.

Celtic considering moves for English pair

Celtic will need to pay around £5 million if they want to sign Brentford’s Romaine Sawyers and Huddersfield’s Tommy Smith. The Daily Record believe that Celtic will bid around £2.5 million for Smith, who plays at right-back, and offer the same amount for midfielder Sawyers.

Hayes: We need to take Sarajevo seriously

Celtic winger Jonny Hayes has warned his team-mates that they cannot afford to approach tomorrow’s Champions League qualifier against Sarajevo lightly. “You don’t ever think about having the job done in the first leg because that’s when you get your bum felt,” Hayes said. “If you go over there and be too cocky you can come back home trailing 2-0 with no away goals.”

Fleetwood ‘close’ to signing Rossiter

Rangers midfielder Jordan Rossiter is on the brink of leaving Ibrox, according to the Scottish Sun. The 22-year-old is said to be “close” to a move to Fleetwood Town, where former Rangers midfielder Joey Barton is manager.

Debutants on scoresheet as Rangers brush Oxford aside

Steven Gerrard handed no fewer than six of his summer signings run-outs as Rangers romped to a comfortable 5-0 victory over Oxford United in their first pre-season friendly at Ibrox yesterday afternoon. Joe Aribo, George Edmundson, Jake Hastie and Greg Stewart all kicked off the meeting with Karl Robinson’s side while Jordan Jones and Sheyi Ojo both came on for the last half hour.

Craig: We’d love to have May back at McDiarmid Park

St Johnstone midfielder Liam Craig thinks Aberdeen striker Stevie May, who has been linked with a return to Perth, should re-sign for the McDiarmid Park club. Craig said: “If Stevie was to come back in then there are still a lot of faces that he played with and the same good folk around the club. If we can get him back here then with Danny, Matty Kennedy, Mikey, Callum Hendry and David McMillan, we have creativity and goals.”
