YOU have to give the Rangers board credit for backing Steven Gerrard in the manner that they have this summer and for allowing him to add to the squad as significantly.

The first team group right now is huge and it has to be brought down sooner rather than later to a more manageable level.

Two younger players - Stephen Kelly and Cammy Palmer - both left the club this week but hopefully you will see them back and even better in the future.

Kelly impressed boss Ian McCall during a friendly with Ayr United the other day and has made the loan switch to Somerset Park.

And Palmer has joined Partick Thistle on a similar deal until the end of the season after catching Gary Caldwell’s eye during the same game that saw Rangers run out 6-1 winners as some fringe players got game time.

A number of the ones that played don’t have any future with Rangers.

But Kelly and Palmer now have a chance to go and prove themselves in the Championship and to raise their games again.
