THE draw for the third qualifying round of the Europa League has now taken place, with Rangers drawn against Danish side FC Midtjylland.

Steven Gerrard's side will still have to navigate their way past Luxembourg's Progres Niederkorn - something that, as history tells us, is far from starightforward - before getting the chance to reach the play-offs for the Europa League group stages.

We've looked into Rangers' potential third-round opponents to give fans an idea of what to expect, should Gerrard's side knock out Progres.

While Midtjylland have appeared regularly in Europe over the last decade, the Danes have been knocked out during the Europa League qualifiers in each of the last three seasons. Sweden's Malmo, Apollon Limassol of Cyprus and Turkish side Osmanlispor are the teams that brought their European run to an end in recent years, but Midtjylland have previously shone on the European stage.

Their last appearance in the group stages of the Europa League occurred in 2015, when they finished ahead of Club Brugge and Legia Warsaw as runners-up to Napoli in the group. Midtjylland then faced Manchester United in the last 32, chalking up an impressive 2-1 at home before being hammered 5-1 at Old Trafford.

Midtjylland have faced up against British opposition in European qualifiers on two occasions previously, first losing out to Manchester City after extra time in 2008 then overcoming Southampton with a 3-2 aggregate win in 2015.

On the domestic front, Midtjylland finished in second place in the Danish Super League last season, some 11 points behind eventual winners FC Copenhagen. They've chalked up two wins in their first two league games this season and will surely be match-fit; something that Steven Gerrard will need to be wary of.

There are a couple of Midtjylland players Rangers will need to look out for, should Gerrard's side make it to the third round. Former Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko plays at centre-back for Kenneth Andersen's team, who also count ex-Monaco midfielder Jakob Poulsen among their ranks. Nigeria international forward Paul Onuachu will be the Danes' greatest goal threat and scored 17 league goals last season. Winger Awer Mabil, who has been capped 10 times for Australia, was the joint-second top assist provider in the Danish Super League last season, laying on eight goals for his team-mates.
