Greg Tansey has revealed he asked for his St Mirren contract to be ripped up after he was told to pay for his own hernia operation.

The midfielder's departure from the Buddies was confirmed earlier this afternoon.

Ex-Aberdeen man Tansey has been struggling with an injury for two years and opened up on his decision to leave The Simple Digital Arena.

Taking to social media he wrote: "Just to put the rumours to rest, a reoccurrence of the injury that I've struggled with for the last 2 years after an operation to correct a simple hernia made it worse.

"Unfortunately the injury flared up again. It was found that I needed further surgery to rectify it.

"After many discussions with St Mirren it was clear that I would have to pay for the operation myself.

"After that I felt my position at the club was untenable. These things can happen in football.

"Clubs have to watch their expenses I was just unlucky it involved my surgery.

"Despite all this I hold no ill will towards the club and it has a great bunch of lads in that dressing room that made me feel very welcome from day one.

"Also I'd like to thank all the well wishes from St Mirren fans and wish the club all the best in the future."
