THE Rangers squad is not short of players in the wide areas at present and the deal for Brandon Barker gives Steven Gerrard another option in that position of the team.

When he played for Hibernian, he certainly looked the part and he is the kind of forward that the manager likes because he is quick and he has that ability to really trouble defenders.

The fans will only really know him from his time at Easter Road but, to be honest, what he did there doesn’t really matter and will have no impact on his Rangers career.

He did a turn for Hibs, but playing for Rangers is very different and this is a new challenge for him. I don’t care what he did there, I care about what he can bring to Rangers this season.

The manager obviously feels he can come in and do a job in the team and the squad and the supporters will back Steven’s judgement on that and, like everyone that comes in, give Brandon the chance to prove himself.

He is clearly someone with a lot of talent and a lot of potential so this is a chance for him to go and realise that ability and really make an impact after having a few loan spells - at the likes of Rotherham, NAC Breda and Preston - away from Manchester City over the last few years.

With another player added to the squad, the focus will shift once again to trimming it a bit during the final few weeks of the transfer window. Right now, the squad is just too big and that has to be addressed before the close of business next month.

That, of course, can be easier said than done at times but Steven will hope that, after making signing number nine, he can bring the squad down to a more manageable level.
