Liverpool legend Jamie Redknapp has hailed John McGinn as a '£55million player' after he put in an "outstanding" shift against Tottenham on Sunday.

Ex-Hibs star McGinn, 24, scored Aston Villa's first goal of the season to shock Spurs in London in their first Premier League game of the season.

The industrious midfielder hassled Spurs and their superstars from the first minute and had home fans panicking when his composed first-half finish gave Villa the lead.

Spurs went on to win the game 3-1 in the end, though, thanks to goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane.

But Redknapp praised the Scot for his performance.

In his Daily Mail column, Redknapp said: "A special mention has to go to Aston Villa's John McGinn, or 'McGinniesta' as some call him.

"No disrespect to Tottenham's record signing Tanguy Ndombele, who scored a wonderful goal, but McGinn looked like the £55million midfielder on the pitch at times.

"The guy cost £2.75m when he joined from Hibernian in 2018 but he ran the midfield and opened the scoring.

"It was outstanding."
