Rangers target Ryan Kent has been left out in the cold at Liverpool - starting for their under-23s in a disastrous 4-0 loss to Tottenham less than 24 hours after their first team thrashed Norwich.

The former Gers loanee was told by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp he would not be allowed to leave on loan again this season.

This suggested that the winger would be available on a permanent transfer deal.

However, as no clubs swooped to take the playmaker away before the English transfer deadline, Kent has been left playing with the youngsters as the English Premier League season kicked-off at the weekend.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard made no bones about his desire to bring Kent back to Glasgow after a successful season last term where he picked up the Young Player of the Year gong at the end of season awards ceremony.

But the Ibrox manager accepted defeat after Klopp revealed he wanted Kent to find a new place to “settle down” as a player.

Leeds United were keen on taking Kent to Elland Road.

They went on, however, to sign Arsenal hitman Eddie Nketiah to replace the outgoing Kemar Roofe who moved to Anderlecht.

Kent meanwhile remains at Anfield, but was forced to play with the kids less than 24 hours after the first-team battered Norwich in their opening day fixture.

Spurs under-23s thrashed the young Reds 4-0 at Liverpool’s Academy Ground thanks to a brace from Kazaiah Sterling, one from Tashan Oakley-Boothe and one from Shilow Tracey.

Promising Liverpool forwards Rhian Brewster and Harvey Elliott both also played.
