RANGERS finished what they started against Midtjylland as they followed up their 4-2 victory in Herning last week with another impressive win at Ibrox. This second leg triumph moves Steven Gerrard’s side into the Europa League play-off round. Alfredo Morelos netted twice and Sheyi Ojo was also on target in a 3-1 victory.

RANGERS ARE NOW JUST ONE AWAY FROM THE GROUPS

After overcoming St Joseph’s and Progres Niederkorn with ease in the first two rounds, this was always going to be Rangers’ toughest assignment so far this season. It is another that have coped with comfortably, though.

The two goals Gerrard’s side conceded in Herning last week gave Midtjylland the faintest of hopes heading into the return leg here but there was never any real chance of the Danes causing the second European shock of the week in Glasgow.

A play-off with Legia Warsaw now awaits the Light Blues and Gerrard will take his side to Poland next Thursday aiming to return with another promising result to set up what could be a memorable night under the Ibrox floodlights.

Few fancied Rangers to go all the way and reach the group stages last term but, having done just that, there was more pressure on them this time around. So far, so good.

Legia will be another tricky test for the Gers but, on this form, there is every chance they can get through the fourth qualifier and take their place in the groups once again.

GERRARD’S SIDE WERE A CLASS ABOVE MIDTJYLLAND

Rangers went into the first game at the MCH Arena on the back of a somewhat lacklustre performance against Kilmarnock as they got their Premiership title bid off to a winning start, but only just. The showing in Denmark was significantly better, though.

The Gers didn’t quite pepper the Midtjylland goal as much as they did against Hibernian on Sunday as they romped to a 6-1 victory but they still created chance after chance and deservedly won on the night. It was another hugely encouraging 90 minutes for boss Gerrard.

Midtjylland may have been well beaten but they are a decent outfit and, in Evander and Sory Kaba in particular, they have players that are a threat. But the defence, lead by former Celtic stopper Erik Sviatchenko, was no match for the pace, power and skill of the Light Blues.

All over the park, Rangers were a step up and a level above. That was always going to tell, and Gerrard will be delighted that it did as emphatically as the Gers’ class shone through.

PICKING A MIDFIELD IS GERRARD’S TOUGHEST TASK

Wales international Andy King watched on here after agreeing a loan move that will bring him north of the border from Leicester City. He would certainly have been impressed with what he saw, and only time will tell where he fits in at Ibrox.

The midfield three of Davis, Jack and Kamara were terrific individually and collectively and the performance that Arfield put in slightly ahead of them was just as impressive. Joe Aribo and Greg Docherty had to settled for a spot on the bench.

Gerrard certainly isn’t short of options in the middle of the park and there is no weak combination whatever three he selects from the half a dozen he has to choose from. Those decisions on a week by week basis will be difficult and it would be harsh to leave anyone out on form.

It is a welcome problem for Gerrard to solve, however. On their day, there isn’t a midfield in Scotland that has the balance and quality of Rangers’ central men.

AND SELECTING A CENTRE-BACK PAIRING ISN’T EASY EITHER

The additions of Filip Helander, a £3million signing from Bologna, and former Oldham defender George Edmundson this summer gave Gerrard the four centre-halves he needed this summer. Both have yet to make an impact, though, as Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic have started the season well and made their claims for the jerseys.

Edmundson has looked promising in his brief outings, while Helander hasn’t been seen often enough to make a judgement on whether he is money well spent or not.

If Rangers continue to keep winning, Gerrard will have little reason to change it up at the back and his new signings may have to bide their time this term.

ALFREDO MORELOS LEADS THE WAY ONCE AGAIN

The sight of Alfredo Morelos is likely to leave the Midtjylland breaking out in a sweat and having nightmares. What a torrid time the Colombian gave them over the two legs.

Morelos lead the line superbly last week as Rangers produced almost the perfect away performance. On home soil, he was just as impressive.

His two goals showed his striking instincts at their best but his movement, work ethic and strength were just too much for the Danes to handle. Morelos has started the campaign in excellent scoring form but his all-round game is as good as ever and his showings in this tie have been of the highest quality.
