Celtic are 'nearly there' with the signing of Rosenborg left-back Birger Meling, according to club legend Chris Sutton.

The defender has been linked with the Hoops in recent weeks as they hunt for a challenger to Boli Bolingoli.

Celts have been in the hunt for Meling for a few weeks, according to reports.

But their former striker reckons they're closing in on their man.

Speaking during his pundit work on BT Sport ahead of Motherwell's clash with Hearts in the Betfred Cup this evening, Sutton said: "Celtic have the better squad. I think Celtic are going to make a signing.

"Just going to give you a bit of news, I think Celtic are going to sign the Rosenborg left-back. Meling. We're nearly there."

Meling, 24, is still in contract next December.

But Hoops boss Neil Lennon looks to be willing to spend some of the £25m brought in by the sale of Kieran Tierney.
