Partick Thistle ace James Penrice has heaped praise on 'Auld Da' Kenny Miller after the defender curled in a terrific free-kick against Ross County in a 3-2 win.

Left-back Penrice listened to sage advice from the veteran striker as he stood over a dead ball in extra-time of Saturday's Betfred Cup tie.

Former Rangers and Celtic man Miller allowed the 20-year-old to try his luck with the set-piece and both were ecstatic to see it nestle in the back of the net.

And Penrice hailed his teammate for the guidance - explaining how the ex-Scotland star is always quick to help the younger players.

He said: "Kenny was telling me about the wind and I told him 'I can get this round the wall'.

"He asked if I was sure and came over to say 'listen to your old da'.

"But Kenny's massive, he's played at the highest level, scored goals for Scotland.

"He brings so much intelligence as well and on the park he talks to you, so you need to listen to him.

"He's got the experience and knows what he's talking about."

Penrice scored his side's second of the game on 96 minutes after Miller had levelled a Blair Spittal opener for the visitors.

But the defender admitted he only knew he'd scored when Miller screamed in celebration - because he couldn't see over the wall.

He added: "We do free-kicks in training, I done a lot last year but I didn't get a chance very often because we had other takers.

"I didn't see it and the wall jumped. I just heard Kenny shout and I ran away knowing it was in."

County had big chances during the 90 minutes to win but found themselves lacking a cutting edge.

However Staggies' co-manager Steven Ferguson refused to blame his players for not taking their chances.

He said: "The players are hurting.

"We saw it as a brilliant opportunity to get to the latter stages of a cup. The players were trying but it just wasn't to be."
