Honduras' President has vowed to punish the 'terrorists' who landed former Celtic star Emilio Izaguirre in hospital following riots in the capital before a derby match.

The ex-Hoops defender was treated in a Tegucigalpa hospital for an eye injury after his team bus was attacked before his club Motagaua's explosive showdown with Olimpia.

Izaguirre got shreds of glass in his eye, but insisted he was fine after the attack and there was no lasting damage.

Four people died and several were injured, including two of Izaguirre's team mates - Roberto Moreira and Jonathan Rougier - in the violence, which lasted for hours, with the game eventually being postponed.

Now the Central American country's president, Juan Orlando Hernandez, vowed to launch a massive crackdown on the violence, which rocked football.

He said: "This act of violence will not go unpunished. Honduras must get these terrorists out of football.

"I have ordered the security forces to capture those responsible for the deaths and injuries which have filled the entire nation and the sports world with pain and mourning. We must all do our part,

"The perversity of those who incite hatred and violence as a political instrument for their own interests is reprehensible. We must radically change the management of these events.

"Stadiums must be spaces for healthy co-existence among civilised people, family and friends."

The Honduran Police have oferred a reward of £15,000 for information that leads to arrests, following the riots.

Izaguirre is due to feature for Motagua in a CONCACAF League clash at Managua tomorrow, if he declares himself fit enough to play.
